Here at the start I should say more about the group that got me writing. We had all signed up for the 2020 Moab Folk Camp unbeknownst to one another, and when it was cancelled for Covid, we all took up the offer of some zoom classes. Cozy Sheridan, the prime mover for the Moab Folk Camp had one on songwriting and that's where we sort of ‘met’. The exercises in free writing based on simple prompts, and then reimagining what we wrote as a letter or a song felt freeing and easy. At the end of the class, one student asked the whole group, “Does anyone want to continue using this process in a weekly songwriting group?” Three others said yes, and a little while later a fifth member joined our group.
Each week we meet on Zoom for an hour, share what we've written and offer reactions, suggestions and encouragement. Then at the end of the session we find a prompt (word, phrase, idea) for the next week's writing assignment. Rinse and repeat. Five players seems about right for an hour long process. We are beginning our fourth year of mutual support. Most of what you find on my site, came from this process. I'm very grateful for their support.
